This specification, Free Functional Skills English Level 1 and Level 2, gives students practical skills for the modern world and helps them get the most from life, learning and work.

This specification aims to ensure students have good communication skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. It assesses whether students can use these skills in everyday situations.

Often a student’s first accredited qualification in English, this course can be used in preparation for GCSE. It is suitable for a wide ability range and is used by many schools as a replacement for SATs.

There are no prior learning requirements for this pass/fail qualification.


All students will be required to complete an Initial English and Mathematics assessment which will include listening, speaking, reading writing and mathematics sections. The assessment will determine your appropriate level of study (beginner or Intermediate)

Test of Functional Skills English:

It takes 2 hours 30 minutes and the answers are only written with a computer, which makes time is led by this one.

Free Functional Skills English test is divided into 4 parts:

– Oral comprehension / speaking = 30 mins:
The candidates answer questions while they are listening and they have to give their opinion on a particular subject and explain it.

– Written comprehension = 1 hour:
People in the test have to give answers according to a few texts (usually 3).

– Written expression = 1 hour:
People in the test have to justify their opinion on a specific topic with an essay (usually 3).

Period of November. Starts on the 02-11-2020 to 27-11-2020. Recruitment ongoing

Period of December. Starts on the 30-11-2020 to 18-12-2020 (3 weeks classes). Recruitment ongoing

Monday to Friday from 10 am to 12 pm / 12:15 pm to 2:15 pm.
Course length: 4 weeks
Class size: Max 20 (average class size 7-12)
Minimum age: 18

Each part is graduated upon points, and the final result is on percentage. You need to get 65 % to pass.
