At Tropics Global College, we offer a comprehensive outline of our French Language Courses. These courses are designed to give you a clear understanding of what you will learn over an 8-week period. They cover various topics, including common themes, grammar, and vocabulary. Our approach is flexible rather than strict, as our instructors can adjust their lesson plans to suit the specific needs, goals, and interests of their students. This is our French Courses Overview:

The Level 1 Beginner course focuses on various topics, vocabulary, grammar, cultural content, and skills practice

In terms of topics and vocabulary, students will learn greetings, alphabet and letter combinations, nationalities and countries, jobs, numbers, personal details, filling out forms, food and drinks, holidays in France and abroad, describing a city, and using a dictionary.

Grammar concepts covered include noun gender and number, present tense of the verbs ‘être’ and ‘avoir’, definite and indefinite articles, adjective agreement, ‘ER’ verbs, prepositions of place, sentence structure, key prepositions, and yes/no questions.

The cultural content encompasses Paris, cities in France, French-speaking countries, French names, and a map of France.

The course emphasizes speaking, active practice, role-plays, listening, and pronunciation of key sounds.

The Level 2 Beginner course covers a range of topics, vocabulary, grammar, cultural content, and skills practice.

In terms of topics and vocabulary, students will review and practice vocabulary and grammar while learning to talk about family, friends, celebrities, personal information, hobbies, daily life, days of the week, animals, telling time, consumer goods, describing objects, weather, and shopping.

Grammar concepts covered include possessive pronouns, ‘ER’ verbs review, immediate past tense with ‘venir de’, negative sentences, key verbs (faire, aller, sortir, etc.), demonstrative pronouns, frequency adverbs, reflexive verbs in ‘ER’, and question words.

The cultural content includes French-speaking celebrities, French daily routines, French brands and products, and Brussels.

The course focuses on speaking, active practice, role-plays, listening, and pronunciation of key sounds.

The Level 3 Beginner course encompasses a variety of topics, vocabulary, grammar, cultural content, and skills practice

Topics and vocabulary covered include food and drinks, discussing prices, eating out (booking a table, ordering), eating habits, talking about future plans, and discussing abilities and life experiences.

Grammar concepts addressed in this level include quantities, partitive articles (du, de la, des), near future tense (aller + infinitive), direct object pronouns (le, la, les), passé composé with être and avoir (regular/irregular past participles), verbs pouvoir and savoir, and time words and phrases (depuis, pendant, il y a, etc.).

Cultural content focuses on French food and drinks, eating etiquette, French eating habits, famous French people, French NGOs, and French cheeses.

The course emphasizes speaking, active practice, role-plays, listening, and pronunciation of key sounds.

The Level 1 Elementary course offers a comprehensive range of topics, vocabulary, grammar, cultural content, and skills practice.

The topics covered include discussing language learning, feelings and emotions, hobbies, home descriptions (rooms, furniture, activities), types of accommodation (camping, hotels), object descriptions (shape, size, usage), health discussions (ailments, symptoms, body parts), giving and asking for advice, giving instructions, expressing opinions, and writing letters or emails.

Grammar concepts covered in this level include a review of passé composé, indirect pronouns (lui/leur), expressing aims and causes (pour, parce que), prepositions of place, comparison and superlative, pronoun ‘y’, imperative, and expressing obligations (should/shouldn’t using the conditional form of devoir).

Cultural content includes discussions about Europe, the game of pétanque, the French countryside, and the relationship between French people and sports.

The course emphasizes speaking, active practice, role-plays, listening, and pronunciation of key sounds.

The Level 2 Elementary course covers a wide range of topics, vocabulary, grammar, cultural content, and skills practice.

The topics include describing the past, comparing the past and the present, describing someone’s life, telling stories, asking for information about someone, and imagining life in the future.

The grammar topics covered include the imperfect tense, time phrases, indefinite adjectives and pronouns, using ‘on’, the present continuous tense, passé composé vs imperfect, relative pronouns, the future tense (regular and irregular), si + future, and word order with adjectives.

The cultural content includes historical figures, strikes, demonstrations and struggles in France, French painters, famous places in France, French regions, and French proverbs and quotes.

The course also emphasizes speaking and active practice through role-plays, listening skills, and pronunciation exercises focusing on key sounds.

The Level 3 Elementary course offers a diverse range of topics, vocabulary, grammar, cultural content, and skills practice.

The topics covered include asking for a favor, requesting permission, refusing or accepting, explaining reasons, describing past actions, sharing anecdotes from the past, expressing different levels of certainty, and discussing countries.

In terms of grammar, the course focuses on modal verbs like vouloir, pouvoir, devoir, the conditional tense, using different registers to express opinions, and question words such as quand, comment, pourquoi, etc. Additionally, it covers the gender and prepositions used with countries.

The cultural content includes etiquette in France, Molière and performing arts in France, famous French individuals, the Francophonie, French-speaking Africa, French regions, and La Réunion.

The course emphasizes speaking and active practice through role-plays, listening exercises, and pronunciation drills targeting key sounds.

The Level 1 Intermediate course offers a wide range of topics, vocabulary, grammar, cultural content, and skills practice.

The topics covered include discussing past experiences and encounters, expressing aims and causes, providing detailed descriptions, describing personal motives, justifying choices, talking about travels, making suggestions, giving opinions, hypothesizing, discussing countries and regions, describing fictional characters, expressing feelings and emotions, talking about hopes and aspirations, and expressing regrets.

The grammar covered includes a review of past and future tenses, the past perfect tense, agreement of the past participle with avoir, direct pronouns, the conditional tense, hypothetical statements using si and the imperfect tense, prepositions with countries and regions, the past conditional tense, and adverbs ending in ‘-ment’.

The cultural content includes French regions, French holidays and traditions, popular tourist sites in France, and the French artistic scene.

The Level 2 Intermediate course covers a broad range of topics, vocabulary, grammar, cultural content, and skills practice.

Additionally, the course covers expressing feelings and emotions, discussing obligations, possibilities, and restrictions, and practicing various forms of written communication such as text messages, emails, and letters.

The grammar topics covered include linking words, subjunctive mood, verbs to express opinions, impersonal structures, the gerund form (-ant), direct vs indirect pronouns, structures with verbs expressing feelings, pronoun order, relative pronouns, word order with adjectives, and different styles and registers of language, such as formal and informal.

The cultural content includes an exploration of political life in France, environmental issues, new technologies, social causes, and French cinema, including films, directors, and actors.

The course emphasizes speaking and debating skills, extensive listening exercises, and developing proficiency in producing various styles of written French.

The Level 3 Intermediate course provides a comprehensive coverage of topics, vocabulary, grammar, cultural content, and skills practice.

The course delves into summarizing and reporting information, delivering presentations with appropriate structures and phrases, discussing the professional world, exploring business etiquette, addressing inequalities at work, expressing feelings and ideas, analyzing the media, explaining word meanings, and engaging in wordplay, poetry, proverbs, and metaphors. Language register and colloquial idioms are also explored. The grammar topics covered include reported speech and tense agreement, agreement of collective nouns, suffixes, passive tense, pronoun ‘en’, linking words, nominalization, and language register. The cultural content encompasses discussions on equality in the workplace, the French educational system, French media and its impact on society, French songs, the Francophonie, French poetry, and slam poetry. The course emphasizes speaking and debating skills, extensive listening exercises, and developing proficiency in producing various styles of written French.
